El electrocardiograma (ECG/EKG, del alemán Elektrokardiogramm) es el gráfico que se obtiene con el electrocardiógrafo para medir la actividad eléctrica del corazón en forma de cinta gráfica continua. Es el instrumento principal de la electrofisiología cardiaca y tiene una función relevante en el cribado y diagnóstico de las enfermedades cardiovasculares, alteraciones metabólicas y la predisposición a una muerte súbita cardiaca. El nombre electrocardiograma esta compuesto por electro que implica la actividad eléctrica, cardio del griego corazón y grama, también del griego, que significa escritura. Un electrocardiograma es indoloro. No se envía ningún tipo de electricidad a través del cuerpo. Los electrodos pueden sentirse fríos cuando se aplican por primera. En casos raros, algunas personas pueden desarrollar una erupción o irritación en el sitio en donde se colocaron los parches. Un ECG es muy útil para determinar si una persona tiene cardiopatía y el médico lo puede ordenar si se presenta dolor torácico o palpitaciones. Un ECG puede incluirse como parte de un examen rutinario en pacientes mayores de 40 años.
